Fix a running toilet

Lift the lid and watch a flush.
Thirty seconds of watching tells you which of two parts has failed.

Check the flapper seal.
If water trickles into the bowl, the rubber flap is worn or crooked. That is most cases.

Check the fill valve and float.
If water runs into the overflow tube, the float sits too high or the valve does not close.

Replace the failed part.
Both are cheap and fit by hand. Turn the supply off and flush to empty first.

Set the water level and test.
About two centimetres below the overflow, then flush three times.
