Build a raised bed that lasts
-
Size it for your arms.
Maximum 120 cm wide so you reach the middle from both sides, any length, 40 to 80 cm high. You never step into a raised bed.
-
Use wood that can rot slowly.
Larch or douglas fir untreated beat pressure-treated pine around food. Corners screwed to posts, not butt-joined.
-
Line against voles, not against water.
Wire mesh on the ground, breathable membrane on the inner walls. A waterproof liner turns the bed into a swamp.
-
Fill in layers, coarse to fine.
Branches, then flipped turf and leaves, then rough compost, then 20 cm of soil-compost mix. The rotting core feeds and warms the bed for years.
-
Let it settle before planting.
Two weeks and a rain, then top up the dip. The first year is the hungry-plants year: pumpkins, courgettes, cabbage.

#1 becomes the Core. This atoma is young: submit a better distillation and take the seat.
No gear needed. Your pot, a timer and ice are enough. That is the point.
