Sow seeds indoors

The packet says weeks-before-frost. That date decides everything else.

Use seed compost, not garden soil.
Fine, low-nutrient, and free of the fungi that kill seedlings in trays.

Sow at twice the seed’s depth.
Tiny seeds barely covered, beans a knuckle deep. Water with a mist, not a jet.

Give them light the moment they sprout.
The brightest sill or a cheap grow light. Leggy pale seedlings are light-starved.

Harden off for a week.
Days outside, nights inside, gradually longer. Straight from sill to bed kills more seedlings than frost.
