Jump-start a car safely

Park nose to nose, both engines off.
Cars close enough for the cables, not touching. Handbrakes on.

Red to dead, red to donor.
Positive clamp on the flat battery first, then the other red on the good one.

Black to donor, black to bare metal.
The last clamp goes on an unpainted engine bolt of the dead car, never its negative terminal.

Start the donor, wait, then the dead car.
Two minutes of charge, then turn the key. If it does not fire in ten seconds, wait and retry.

Remove in reverse and drive.
Exact reverse order, then drive twenty minutes so the alternator can recharge.
