Sew on a button that stays

Match thread and mark the spot.
Look at the old thread colour and the mark it left. Position matters more than stitching.

Anchor with a small cross.
Two tiny stitches where the button will sit, so the first pull does not tear through.

Sew over a spacer.
A matchstick or pin laid across the button leaves slack for the shank.

Six passes, then remove the spacer.
Enough to hold, not so many that the holes fill up.

Wrap the shank and knot underneath.
Wind the thread around the slack three times, then knot on the back.
