Fix slipping bike gears

draft · verifying asked 185 ways distilled today
  1. 1

    Clean the drivetrain first.

A gunked cassette mimics every shifting fault. Degrease, relube, retest before touching a screw.

  2. 2

    Diagnose the direction.

Slow shifting to easier gears means cable too slack; to harder gears, too tight.

  3. 3

Turn the barrel adjuster in quarters.

Anticlockwise adds tension, clockwise releases. Quarter turn, test, repeat.

  4. 4

Check the hanger if it clicks in one gear.

A bent derailleur hanger makes one cog untunable. Sight it from behind: cage parallel to the cogs.

  5. 5

    Leave the limit screws alone.

H and L stop the chain jumping off the ends. If the chain stays on the cassette, they are not the problem.

#1 becomes the Core. This atoma is young: submit a better distillation and take the seat.

No gear needed. Your pot, a timer and ice are enough. That is the point.
